【NSF Certification Introduction 】

NSF certification is the authoritative certification issued by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF), an independent, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization established in 1944. NSF specializes in standard setting, product testing and certification services in the field of public health, safety and environmental protection, and is an authority in the field of public health and safety.

Millions of consumer, commercial and industrial products bear the NSF logo each year and have been trusted by consumers, industry insiders and manufacturers for many years. The purpose of NSF is to develop and implement management plans in the areas of public health and services, research and protection of the environment. As a reliable and neutral organization, NSF provides services to governments, industry, and consumers to address issues related to public health and the environment. NSF's technical resources include test equipment and analytical chemistry and microbiology laboratories. NSF professionals include engineers, chemists, toxicologists, public health scientists, and computer scientists with extensive experience in public health, food safety, water quality, and the environment. Certifications issued by NSF are recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Standards Council of Canada (SCC).

【NSF Certification Process 】

A. The customer submits A written application to Shangdu Certification Consulting Company, and provides accurate product information, including :① the standards implemented by the product ② the instructions of the product ③ the explosion diagram and photos of the product ④ the end use and performance of the product ⑤ the product formula;

B. Preliminary data review, cost and certification cycle confirmation, both parties sign a service contract;

C. Formulation and physical evaluation

Raw material compliance evaluation, material evaluation, structural integrity evaluation, performance test evaluation;

D. Parts list or technical data

For example, parts related to drinking water are tested for toxic substances in accordance with NSF Standard 61 to determine whether the level of toxic substances exceeds the requirements - only certain materials and appliances need to be tested for toxic substances. If the customer's product contains parts or raw materials that have passed the NSF certification, the inspection requirements for the customer's product will be reduced. Therefore, the use of NSF-certified parts or raw materials can save the applicant company time and cost, while improving the passing rate of finished product testing.

E. Submit samples for testing

The performance of the final product as well as components or raw materials and their effects on health are assessed.

F, the first factory inspection

If the product is applying for NSF certification for the first time, the first factory inspection is required. NSF will send a representative to the site to inspect the plant to verify that the information submitted by the company at the time of application is consistent.

G. Issue certificates

The applicant company's products have passed the test successfully, and the factory audit has also met the requirements of NSF. The applicant company will be authorized to use the NSF logo and issue the NSF certificate.

【 Water Purifier certification standard detailed explanation 】

In the United States, an important criterion for evaluating the filtration capacity of water purifiers is whether they have passed the NSF standard certification.

Water filtration equipment involves the following standards:

  • The NSF/ANSI 42 Drinkability test tests the ability of a water filter to remove contaminants from drinking water that affect taste, odor, and clarity in order to comply with conditions suitable for human consumption. Standard 42 is the most common standard for drinking water treatment, which establishes minimum requirements for material safety, structural integrity, product documentation, and performance claims for the reduction of sensory, non-health-related contaminants. The most common claim is a reduction in chlorine content and a reduction in particulates. The most common technology covered by Standard 42 is carbon filtration, and the standard includes both product inlet (POE) and point of use (POU).
  • NSF/ANSI 44 establishes minimum requirements for certification of residential cation exchange water softening installations. The scope of Standard 44 includes material safety, structural integrity, accuracy of brine systems, product documentation and hardness reduction, and performance reduction of special contaminants from a known quality water source. The most common claims in the standard 44 are for barium reduction, radium 226/228 reduction and softening device performance.
  • NSF/ANSI 53 Water Quality Health Test: Standard 53 is used to test whether the filter material is safe, the product structure is complete, the product information is correct, and the efficiency of filtering pollutants such as lead, cystic, and VOCs(volatile organic compounds), which is a critical consideration when selecting a water purifier. Standard 53, the second most commonly used DWTU standard, establishes minimum requirements for material safety, structural integrity, product documentation, and health-related contamination-reduction performance claims, such as lead, cysts, and VOA, among many contaminants. Some products are classified under both standards 42 and 53 because they make claims that combine sensory and health.
  • NSF/ANSI 55 UV Disinfection: Establishes minimum requirements for certification of UV systems. The scope of Standard 55 includes material safety, structural integrity, product documentation and UV performance. Uv systems are classified as Class A (UV dose minimum 40mj/cm2). The system may be POE or POU. Class A systems may have declarations for the disinfection of water that may be contaminated by disease-causing bacteria, viruses, fungi or Giardia. Class B systems may have a claim to reduce harmful microorganisms normally produced in the water.
  • NSF/ANSI 58 reverse osmosis drinking water treatment system: This standard mainly tests the safety and energy efficiency ratio of machine reverse osmosis components, and has nothing to do with the quality of the effluent. Standard 58 establishes minimum requirements for certification of POU reverse osmosis systems. Standard 58 covers material safety, structural integrity, product documentation, total solids solution (TDS) reduction, and additional contaminant reduction claims. These additional contaminant reduction claims may include cysts, barium reductions, radium 226/228 reductions, copper reductions, hexavalent and trivalent chromium reductions, arsenic reductions, nitrate/nitrite reductions, cadmium and lead reductions.
  • NSF/ANSI 60 Drinking Water Treatment chemicals: This standard mainly tests the chemical substances and chemicals used to treat drinking water, whether they meet the safe drinking water standards, and has nothing to do with the effect of water treatment.
  • NSF/ANSI 61 Drinking water system components: This standard mainly tests whether the toxic substances of the various parts and components of the water purifier and the whole machine and the toxic substances resolved into the water meet the drinking water and food safety standards, and has nothing to do with the water treatment effect.
  • NSF/ANSI 62: Establishes minimum requirements for certification of POU and POE distillation systems. The scope of Standard 62 includes material safety, structural integrity, product documentation, total solid dissolution (TDS) reduction, and other contaminant reduction claims.
  • NSF/ANSI 177: Standard 177 establishes minimum requirements for residential bath filtration systems. Standard 177 covers material safety, structural integrity, product documentation, and free chlorine reduction

How long is the NSF certificate valid?

NSF is valid for one year, and it will visit the factory from time to time to conduct inspection and tracking services and collect annual fees. The purpose of the inspection is to ensure that the certified product continues to be produced in the same factory as the requirements at the time of the first factory inspection to ensure that the product always meets the requirements of the certification. If the audit or sample test fails, the certificate will be revoked.
